    Tanta
    Pancho Fierro 117, San Idisro
(in front of the Olivar Hotel)
    421-9708
(There are two other locations in Surco and Miraflores)

Saying that Tanta is a deli is an understatement in the same way that you would casually mention that Shaikra knows how to dance. The place is yet another restaurant from the genius of Chef Gaston, owner of Astrid y Gaston and La Mar. Every item on the menu sounded better than the one before it. You don’t believe me, go and see for yourself. Here’s a link to the English version: http://www.aracari.com/aracariperu/c...gles_tanta.pdf. I had three items from the Dollar (3 Sol) Menu: Tortilla and Ham, Trout & Pepper and Crab & Shrimp. Each was a very small portion on a piece of bread.

My next course was Scallops Parmesan. This is a big hit all over Peru, and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why. You’ve got scallops, you’ve got cheese – just add heat. Anyway, I figured that if anyone would make them right, it would be these guys. They were very good, but not outstanding. I followed that up with a Rocotito. That’s a hot pepper stuffed with beef and prawns over a bed of potatoes with some cheese bubbling, just to add to the excitement. It was very good. Maybe a little to picante for my tastes, but very good.

I passed on desserts (they looked great) and ordered a Roxie (beef, pesto, tomato and mozzarella) sandwich to go. I’m sure it will come in handy later tonight. Lunch (with the sandwich) came to 71 Soles.

The ride from Miraflores should run you around 6 or 7 soles. If I understand the addresses correctly, the branch in Miraflores is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Parque Central/Pizza Alley area.

I did eventually find the Tanta in Miraflores (see my post about Scena) and had lunch there one day. They have the same menu as the other location but this one is an easy walk from just about anywhere in Miraflores. The 0nly downside was my waiter was horrible, just all around lousy service. I asked for the check 4 times and was pretty much ignored. I finally got up and started to walk out the door and wouldn't you know that finally got his attention. I rarely do this but this guy go a big fat nothing for a tip. The upside is the foods great, it's reasonable, and you probably won't get the waiter I had.

    The address is:

    Avenida 28 de Julio 888
    Miraflores
    447-8377

Coincidentally, I also just got back from Lima, and had lunch at T'antas in Miraflores with 3 other guys from ISG. The food was wonderful. Unfortunately I was just getting over a case of Montezuma's revenge, so I ate carefully.

I had the Dieta de Pollo, and the Pavo Sanguiche, and both were excellent.

The food was incredible and so well presented that I took pictures of everybody's plate. The desserts are divine.

Philo gives it 5 out of 5 stars, and reasonable prices also.

I am really surprised, why did they name that word : "Tanta", there is a very poor place located in the highlands (above the 4000 meters) of Yauyos province, where is no electricity , I visited that place more than 10 years ago.
But , the tamal is well known in all places in Latin America , even in the U.S. , but now , the question is where the tamal originally is from ????

FYI the word tanta and tamal are different things. Tanta in spanish means reunion or meeting. So the name of the restaurant Tanta meets a place to meet in quechua which seems not so bad for a peruvina restaurant.

Gaston has recently opened a new location in Larcomar. The outdoor table seating is optimum for babe watching during the busy weekends...

I ate at a Tanta restaurant last weekend and ordered the Lomo Saltado. The cost was 39 soles. To drink, I had a chicha morada for 8.50 soles. I have eaten Lomo Saltado from a ton of places in Lima to include the high end steak restaurants and in my opinion, I think Tanta prepares the Lomo Saltado very well. Their portions are not the biggest nor is the price the cheapest, but the flavor, quality of ingredients and presentation are tops:D in my book.

Men, I have to tell, Tanta its very good, but if you wanna taste A REALLY GOOD lomo saltado its not the best place, i recommend you to going "Menfis" in Zarate, here is the link, the price its $ 3.80 or S/.12.00 aprox and ask for noodle salad to start with "el aji" it's way better than Tantas.

A few days ago I enjoyed Tanta's "tacu tacu a lo pobre". I have eaten this dish many times. The cost was 39 soles. Can anybody recommend another restaurant in Lima that makes a kick ass tacu tacu a lo pobre ?
Note that there are slight subtle variances of the food from one tanta location to the next. This same dish at the jockey plaza location uses a cheaper tougher piece of meat versus the location in chacarilla where the meat is more tender.
Here is a pic of my order.

I'm fond of the one at Superba on Petit Thouars, right near Javier Prado.

But -- as far as quality and taste, you can't go wrong at Tanta.
